Servers are special computer systems which are used for running a specific application. While a PC or desktop is used by one person or a few people only, a server can be used to "serve" an application or applications to many hundreds or thousands of people at one time. This is helpful to an organization in keeping costs down (by not having to load applications on each PC). It also helps to give a centralized location for a company to run applications instead of being spread out all across an organization.
Types of servers include web servers, database servers, email or Exchange servers. These servers are the ones the people using the servers can most identify with. A web server may run Apache HTTP or IIS from Microsoft. This type of server carries the webpages that are accessed by internet or intranet users. A database server might run MySQL or SQLServer from MicroSoft. These servers can be used for applications built in-house or they can work in conjunction with the web servers. Email and Exchange servers send and receive the email that we receive and send within our organizations.
Servers not normally seen by the outside world are the network appliance type servers. These servers are very specific in the jobs that they do. They are possibly bare-bones servers which control the network switch and routers in an organization. They are also used as print servers and gateways. And finally, a network appliance can also be a hardware spam filter and firewall. These control the spam email before it arrives on the email server. The firewall server approves and denies access to corporate networks from outside sources.
